conditionforlife.com -diseases caused by human metapneumovirus (HMPV) have signs similar to Covid-19 which makes 143,500 deaths as of November 5, 2021. The Jakarta Health Office (Dinkes) noted that there were 214 issues of acute respiratory infections (Ari) due to human metapneumovirus (HMPV) from 2023 to January 2025. “Since 2023 until January 2025, we have recorded the overall problem of Ari due to HMPV spread in Jakarta as many as 214 cases,” said Head of The Jakarta Health Office Ani Ruspitawati, informed conditionforlife TV, Saturday (11/1/2025). Ani said, 214 HMPV issues consisted of 13 issues in 2023, 121 issues in 2024, and 79 issues found during January 2025. So, can HMPV make death to the sufferer and how to worship him?

HMPV cause of death

Epidemiologist from Griffith University Australia, Dicky Budiman, said the HMPV virus can make death. However, the percentage is small. “Case fatality or death rate is in the range of the highest one%. It is based on a study conducted in 2021,” he said when contacted Kompas.com on Sunday (12/1/2025). He said, death from HMPV has the potential to be experienced by the next virus patient who is included in the vulnerable group. HMPV vulnerable groups are as follows: children under one year or 6-8 months old elderly people over 70 years old people with comorbid diseases such as diabetes or lung disease people with low immunity or decreased immunity. “This (death) usually takes place usually because of complications, there is suspicion of infection, or co-infection (other viruses),” explained Dicky. HMPV is transmitted through droplets or splashes of saliva when the next person with the virus coughs, sneezes, or talks. HMPV can also be spread through direct contact with patients or touching contaminated items. HMPV sufferers will experience similar signs of Covid-19 in the form of cough, fever, runny or stuffy nose, wheezing, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. HMPV also sometimes makes obvious complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, asthma relapse, and ear infections.

HMPV treatment

Diagnosis of HMPV is done by taking a sample of fluid from the nose or throat. The sample is then tested in a laboratory to clear or confirm the type of virus.

Dicky revealed that so far no specific drug or vaccine has been found for HMPV. However, he said, it does not mean there is no therapy that can be done to avoid or cure HMPV. According to him, HMPV sufferers can undergo healing therapy based on complaints of signs or clinical signs that arise due to contracting the virus. For example, intravenous fluid assistance or oxygen therapy to HMPV patients to stay hydrated and deal with breathing problems. Because there is no cure, Dicky appealed to the public to prevent HMPV transmission along with implementing healthy living behaviors. He added that HMPV is a virus that has been available in Indonesia for a long time. Therefore, many people already experience immunity derived from this virus. Even so, people who recover from HMPV infection do not necessarily have lifelong immunity from the virus.

HMPV survivors have the potential to return to viral infections later in the day. Even so, the signs experienced will be lighter. “It does not mean that we can miss being infected repeatedly because the main commitment comes from the disease is to avoid getting sick or not being infected,” added Dicky.
